Tips for Living in Your Home During a Remodel

Declutter

Organize, declutter, and refresh your space! We all probably have too much STUFF. Even if you aren’t looking to remodel, you should declutter your home at least once a year. We do a lot of remodels for homeowners heading into retirement, empty nesters, and other people who want to make their forever home perfect for their lifestyle and comfortability. If you have kids or grandkids, it’s likely that you have dusty trophies, finger painted artwork, teddy bears that have seen better days, and maybe even some birth certificates that your kids should probably pick up! The more years and history we have behind us, the more stuff we collect. The stories and memories are so special, but don’t make the mistake of waiting until the last minute to clear out a room for a renovation. If you’re taking the time to remodel your home, take the time to sort through your belongings beforehand. You’ll thank yourself for organizing beforehand, and once your new space is ready, you’ll feel even better about not moving all that junk back in.

Be Honest

The more you can communicate in the design phase the better. We always encourage you to express your needs and how you’re envisioning the remodel process to go. Life can often be busy and stressful, so take the time to reflect on the important dates on your calendar and be realistic about your other obligations. If you have a trip to go on or a big event to plan, make sure that’s communicated to your home remodeling team in order to avoid any major conflicts that could alter your project’s timeline. Do you want your home addition complete in time for guests by next year’s holiday season? Or does your dream kitchen need to wait a bit longer while you get settled into a new job, parenthood, or grandparenthood? Every situation is different and it’s always a great idea to stay mindful and know your limits. Remodeling your home is an investment and a major decision. The final result should be exactly what you dreamed of.

Secure the Pets and Kids

We regularly meet with clients at their homes. Meetings often end up with a dog in our lap or the kids realizing they have some new audience members in the living room and now is the opportune moment to debut their puppet show. We love to design and build, and there’s something especially beautiful about being trusted to remodel a home that already has a story under its roof. There is an emotional aspect to every project, and a special relationship with each client. Meeting the adorable pets and getting to know all the families on a personal level are some of the best parts of this job. But some animals and children might not do well with the noise of power tools or the sound of a hammer! We keep the tidiness of our job sites held to the highest standard, but from wet paint to concrete to and more, you’ll want to make sure your kids and pets are going to be comfortable, and not get into any mischief.
